On Friday, February 22nd, I went to Cayenne in Kampala for a night out with some friends. The night started out well, but took a turn when I decided to go for a swim. I had no expectation that this would be an issue, and there were no signs I saw to tell me otherwise, so I jumped in. After about a minute or two, one of the bouncers came over and ordered me out of the pool, which I obeyed. After which, he showed me a sign which was facing away from the main entrance to the pool area, was in shadows, and was hidden behind a plant, that read “No Swimming, fine 100,000 Ush”. I felt this was an overly punitive measure, especially considering the fact that I had no expectation that this was not an ok thing for me to do, and I voiced this concern to the bouncer. An argument broke out between the bouncer and I and after some time he swung back and hit me in the face. When after this, I began telling him to call the police, he refused and said that they wouldn’t beleive me. He then proceeded to threaten to poke my eyes out, multiple times. When the danger of the situation finally occured to me, I proceeded to pay the fine and leave Cayenne.
When I returned to Cayenne a day later to explain the situation to one of the managers, they said they would get back to me, but never called me back. I spoke to another woman who did contact me back, but essentially told me that she couldn’t do anything further because she didn’t feel there was enough evidence. Finally, I made one last effort to talk to the head of security and the head bouncer. This meeting began with several nonsensical comparisons meant to convince me that logically, the situation should not have occured: they argued that if the man had hit me then I would have been in the hospital, essentially arguing it was impossible for this man to have hit me without his full effort. The two men proceeded to switch between berating my own behaviour (in what sounded like they felt my being intoxicated was an excuse for hitting me), making excuses for the bouncer, and trying to convince me that it didn’t happen or that I hit myself, despite the fact that my friend who accompanied me had witnessed the entire thing. They also argued that since I felt the bouncer deserved to be fired and felt I deserved the fine back that this was evidence that I was lying. As an honest person who prides myself on gaining the trust of others, and given the fact that I had already been hit in the face and was now being called a liar, this was a horrendous experience. In addition, they actually admitted to the fact that the bouncer had made the threats against me to poke my eyes out, but apparently did not feel this was an issue that warranted any action. I finally grew tired of their circular conversations and brow-beating and left.
Given that this large man hit a small woman that was clearly incapable of hurting him, I find it highly unlikely that it was his first offence. Information I have found on the internet and advise from talking to locals has confirmed that this is a common occurence at Cayenne. One local I spoke to, when I revealed the name Cayenne, responded, “oh yeah, don’t go there.” My experience has shown me that Cayenne clearly has a very dangerous environ SU/ment that is exasperated by management’s lackadaisical attitude towards the violence. I hate to think what will be the next step in the escalation of violence. I feel this is a very dangerous place and given the number of excellent bars in Kampala, urge you not to go there. This entire situation has created a black cloud around my experiences in Kampala and I would hate to see this happen to anyone else.
