Environmental Alert (EA) was founded in 1988 and is officially registered with the NGO Board and incorporated as a company limited by guarantee. EA is a national nonprofit, nongovernmental organization working with local communities in Moyo, Adjumani and Yumbe in West Nile, Tororo in Eastern Uganda, Mubende and Wakiso in Central Uganda as well as Kyenjojo in Western Uganda through linking evidence based information and micro-advocacy action to intermediary and national policy and advocacy processes.

‘to contribute to improved livelihoods of vulnerable communities by enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainable natural resource management.’
In these areas, EA promotes economically viable, socially acceptable and ecologically alternative livelihood activities in which wetlands, land and forests are sustainably utilized and increasingly delivering benefits appropriate benefits to meet the community’s social and economic needs.
EA plays a key role in the ongoing dialogue towards redefining the Non – Governmental Organization (NGO) sector as well as enhancing the sector image, a necessity if NGOs are to retain and increase their space in socio-economic development in Uganda and East Africa.
EA is a member of the Wetlands Advisory Committee, Agri-profocus among several other high profile technical committees, and also a member of the World Conservation Union IUCN. It also holds coordination responsibilities for selected thematic partnership initiatives as Secretariat of PROLINNOVA Uganda country programme, and Secretariat of Uganda Forest Working Group which also obligates E.A to administer the F.A.O – National Forest Programmes facility grant as a C.S.O – Government of Uganda collaborative initiative. EA has progressively sought strategic partnerships and has grown its programme implementing partners to include coalition groups at local government levels, national level networks & coalitions as well as sub regional initiatives including the Civil Society budget advocacy group, Uganda Land Alliance, PELUM , REDD+and others.
